Mother Nature designed your toes to spread across the ground as you walk. Your toes spread to provide a more stable base to support you.
People who have never worn shoes have feet that fan wide: their toes naturally spread across the ground.
Shoes and socks are protective and help us absorb the shock of walking, running and jumping, but they also limit our toes to a smaller space. This trains our toes to move in a confined area. In shoes, our toes do not have the freedom to spread, lift and curl as they do when barefoot.
It’s time to free your feet and love your toes! This massage reminds your toes of their natural ability to spread wide.
Feel free to let your hands play along while you try to do these motions. The more fun you have, the more quickly your brain will learn.
Time needed: 5 minutes
How to open your toes and create a stable base for your feet:
- Remove your shoes and have a seat. Rest your feet into the ground. Breathe low into your body.
- Spread your toes wide, and relax. Wide, then relax.
- Lace your fingers between your toes. Relax into the stretch. Breathe.
- Pulling your fingers upward stretches the arch of your foot. Curling down stretches the top. Arch and curl your feet with your fingers between your toes to strengthen your foot muscles while they are stretched.
- Release your toes.
